Christmas Fun and Turning One!

December was a busy month for our family, starting with Hubby and my anniversary on December 2 and continuing to just the everyday festivities that lead up to Christmas. Since this was Baby 2's first Christmas (and first birthday the week after Christmas), I constantly wanted to ensure he was not getting "shortchanged" (even if he doesn't remember these days) just because he was the second born. The good news is that my firstborn reached an age where he could participate more fully in fun Christmas activities, so he got excited at the idea of visiting Santa Claus and decorating the tree (taking photos in matching outfits, not so much).

In December we did, in fact, get pictures taken with Santa in matching white sweaters (Baby 2 had just woken form his nap so was just a little terrified), as well as various other Christmas activities including decorating a gingerbread house, eating holiday-themed donuts, learning a couple of Christmas carols (he learned how to sing most of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "We Need a Little Christmas"), a winter party at school (lots of snacks, crafts, and visit from Mommy!) and decorating the tree with Pop It ornaments that come in his advent calendar each day. We also took Baby 2 for a birthday/Christmas photoshoot in preparations for his big day at the end of the month. The pictures turned out better than I could have imagined! (And I'm always especially critical during photoshoots).

After final shopping, wrapping, visiting friends in town, a little festive week/holiday party at work, and sending out our Christmas cards with our family's "year in review," it was finally time for the big First Christmas Eve and First Christmas Day!

So, as mentioned in my last post , we have started Baby on a bedtime routine. Sort of. Baby started getting sleepy between 7pm and 9pm and then sleeping his longest sleep (about four hours) for quite a few days in a row. All the articles recommend using this time to get Baby used to the same pattern, to help him wind down, help him distinguish day from night, and get him drowsy so he can eventually learn to fall asleep on his own. Not to mention that as a librarian I'd been wanting to read more books to him (a big part of the routine), but was discovering how hard it was to find the time between feeding and naps. Week of Firsts

The week before my last week of maternity leave has actually been a week of exciting firsts! And many of them all took place on the same day! Some first experiences will help us prepare for going back to work. Others were fun surprises or planned events to help us all get the most out of our remaining leave time at home with our little one. August 15 First afternoon away from Mom and Dad: Though neither Hubby nor I want to leave our son at all, it's important to have our sitters (a.k.a. Baby's many wonderful grandparents) get a chance to practice caring for him in advance. They can begin to learn his patterns, discover any issues we have to deal with before we're less accessible at work, and find out how much milk Baby will need while we're away. We can also find out how much separation anxiety Baby might experience, and hopefully get him used to being apart from his parents for a little while. September 22, 2018 was just an average Saturday morning. Hubby and I were planning to sleep in. Maybe go to the gym. I was planning something else, but I didn't expect anything to come from it. We'd been trying for a baby since after our wedding in December of 2017, really getting serious in the new year, and hoping month after month that our baby dreams and start of our family would finally come true. By September I was dejected, but still hopeful. It hadn't quite been a year--the time when my doctor said he would start doing fertility tests--but it was getting close. I'd written sad poetry and short stories to get out my emotions. I'd stayed up late so many nights just perusing the "Glow" ovulation and pregnancy app on my phone, reading the experiences of other women trying to conceive (TTC).
